Empowering Women, Transforming Communities:
The Women-Centric Village Initiative in Subdega
In the heart of Odisha’s Sundargarh district, the “Women-Centric Village” intervention in Subdega block stands as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of placing women at the center of development. Spanning 125 villages across 14 Gram Panchayats, this initiative is a blueprint for how targeted community mobilization can address gender inequality and drive socio-economic progress. Aligned with the ninth LSDG of engendered development in villages, it showcases the impact of gender-focused interventions on reshaping communities.
At the core of this initiative is the recognition that improving social outcomes for women requires a multi-faceted approach. Through 106 surveys, 26 meetings, and focused discussions with 158 adolescent girls, the program addressed critical issues related to reproductive health. By creating essential awareness and empowering women to take charge of their health and well-being, the initiative has ensured a 100% immunization rate among pregnant women in the covered villages. This achievement is a significant step toward ensuring healthier pregnancies and safer childbirths, contributing to the overall well-being of mothers and infants.
The program’s focus on social media advocacy has also had a notable social impact. With the creation of 63 new social media accounts and the sharing of 22 posts addressing local issues, the initiative has successfully leveraged digital platforms to engage communities and resolve seven critical issues. This online presence has empowered women to be vocal about their concerns and assert their rights in the digital space.
Empowering women to take on leadership roles in their communities has been a cornerstone of the “Women-Centric Village” initiative. By promoting women’s participation in community decision-making processes, the program has made significant strides in enhancing their socio-political roles. Women now have a more prominent voice in the community, leading to more equitable policies and practices that reflect their needs and perspectives.
A key political achievement of the initiative was the women Gram Sabha organized in June 2024. Reaching 123,988 individuals, with 91.5% being women, this platform allowed community members to raise concerns about essential services such as toilets, drinking water, and social security. With 18,444 issues submitted, the active involvement of women ensured that their priorities were not only heard but acted upon, reinforcing their influence in local governance.
Cultural change is vital for sustaining long-term gender equity. The initiative recognized the importance of involving the younger generation in gender equity discussions, leading to the introduction of the “Games for Change” program. Through this initiative, 145 boys and girls participated in activities designed to instill values of equality and respect. By engaging youth in these cultural shifts, the program is shaping a future where gender equity is embedded in the community’s cultural fabric.
Additionally, the initiative’s emphasis on reproductive health education has not only equipped women with crucial knowledge but also challenged and transformed traditional norms around women’s health. This cultural shift toward prioritizing women’s health and well-being is laying the groundwork for a more equitable society.
The economic empowerment of women is essential for achieving sustainable development. The “Women-Centric Village” initiative has focused on equal pay and reproductive health education, equipping women with the resources and support they need to lead healthy, productive lives. By addressing these fundamental economic issues, the program has empowered women to contribute more effectively to their households and communities.
Furthermore, the initiative’s focus on building women’s capacities has enabled them to take active roles in the local economy. By ensuring that women are involved in decision-making processes and have access to economic opportunities, the program has strengthened their socio-economic roles and contributed to the overall development of the region.
